How multi-split systems work
One outdoor compressor connects to several indoor units, one per room. Each has its own controls, so you can heat one room while cooling another, or leave spare rooms off.

One outdoor unit
A single outdoor compressor typically runs 2 to 6 indoor units, keeping outdoor clutter down.
